Thousands protest in Barcelona after Sota, the dog, is fatally shot by police

A dog who was fatally shot by police after trying to defend its owner, a homeless man under arrest, has sparked large-scale protests in Barcelona with thousands of people protesting the police action.

A police man shot Sota on the streets of Barcelona and witnesses said they saw the dog bark nervously when the dog’s owner, a homeless man who sells bracelets to tourists, was being arrested.

The police officer said he had no choice to shoot the dog when the dog bit him.

But there are reports that there was no biting involved. According to the police, the young man confronted the agents, refused to tie his dog (which responded to the name of Sota) and was then asked to identify.

The police said the action was justified.
