Friday Fun: High school yearbook photo of Alpha the dog wins the Internet

Best high school yearbook photo for 2017 is Alpha the dog.

Alpha is the service dog at Stafford High School in Virginia. His owner Andrew (AJ) Schalk is a Type 1 diabetic. Alpha Schalk has been trained to recognize by smell when AJ’s blood sugar dips. Alpha’s job is to give AJ a 20 to 40 minute warning that he needs to get insulin.

Alpha’s work is so important he’s allowed to be with AJ 24 hours a day and that means being with him at school. He’s there so much the other high school students think of Alpha as one of their own.

That’s why yearbook editor Grace Fuller decided Alpha should get his own photo. The photo was taken by Diana Bloom.
