Smoking orangutan at Indonesia zoo criticized for poor treatment of animals draws new anger

Bandung Zoo has long been criticized by animal activists for its deplorable conditions of the animals who are chained and kept at the facility in Indonesia and a new video of a smoking orangutan has sparked new anger.

The orangutan got the cigarette after it was flicked into the animal’s enclosure.

Bandung Zoo came under fire after activists posted videos and photos of bears so hungry they ate their own species and chained elephants appearing to weep.

The zoo’s spokesman issued a statement saying there is staff to watch over the animals but the officer responsible for guarding the animal enclosures may have been in the washroom at the time the cigarette was thrown in.

The orangutan was seen picking up the cigarette and smoking it.

Signs at the zoo tell visitors not to throw food or cigarettes to the animals.
