Meatless Monday: Beatriz at Dinner makes point about hunting and preservation

One of the most striking scenes in the new movie Beatriz at Dinner is a confrontation between the lead character, played by Salma Hayek and a real estate developer over his hunting fetish.

The developer, played by John Lithgow, proudly tells everyone about the joys of hunting as guests at the dinner party discuss an upcoming trip to South Africa. The animals there would “basically be gone if it wasn’t for the hunting,” says one person as Lithgow declares hunting isn’t murder but the original dance between man and beast.

He then proudly shows a photo of himself next to a rhino.

Hayek’s character calls the act of killing an animal “sick” and throws the phone in disgust.
