Maine lobstermen save deer spotted swimming miles offshore

A crew of lobstermen made a most unusual — and life-saving — catch this week.

The trio rescued a deer stranded and swimming helplessly offshore of Maine on Monday.

“Found this little guy 5 miles offshore today drifting farther away from land,” Ren Dorr posted on Facebook.

Dorr, and fellow lobstermen Shawn Dowling and Jared Thaxter, just had to help.

“Couldn’t let the poor guy suffer and drown,” Dorr added.

So, they hauled him aboard.

Then, the crew sailed half hour to land and dropped him off near the beach.

“He was gonna die, 100 percent,” Dorr told the Bangor Daily News. There’s no ifs, ands or buts — he was a goner. I couldn’t have that on my conscience, obviously. That’s not the guy that I am, so I figured I’d bring him in.”

Lobstermen with heart.

The fishermen were just thrilled with the chance to help.

“We did a cool thing yesterday,” Jared Thaxter posted on Facebook.

Then they sailed back out to tend to their traps.
