Joaquin Phoenix praises plant-based meal at Golden Globes, calls for action on climate change

Not exactly known for his subtlety, Joaquin Phoenix used his Golden Globe win for the Joker to call out lip service and ask for action on climate change.

In his best acting award speech Sunday night, both rambling and riddled with profanity, Phoenix said more needs to be done to prevent the bushfires now devouring Australia and climate change in general.

“It’s really nice that so many people have sent their well wishes to Australia but we have to do more than that,” Phoenix said.

He said taking “private jets to Palm Springs” won’t help, a clear slap at Hollywood elite.

And, he asked everyone to do better.

“Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat. But the boat is f****** rocked,” he said.

Phoenix did single out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which stages the annual award show for TV and film, for kudos.

The vegan actor thanked the association for “recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It’s a very bold move of making tonight plant-based and it really sends a powerful message.”

The organization said it purposefully made the decision to serve a meatless meal.

“The climate crisis is impossible to ignore and after speaking with our peers, and friends in the community, we felt challenged to do better,” Lorenzo Soria, president of the organization, told CNN in a statement. “The decision to serve an entirely plant-based meal was embraced by our partners at the Beverly Hilton, and represents a small step in response to a big problem.”
