Iowa man charged after allegedly killing relatives’ two elderly dogs with an axe

A man in northeast Iowa has been charged after court records indicate he is under investigation for killing two dogs with an axe.

Douglas Usgaard, 21, was charged with two counts of animal torture, according to Winneshiek County court records.

The records say Usgaard killed a 14-year-old labradoodle and a 13-year-old Shi Tzu-bichon mix last weekend at a Decorah home where he was living with family members.

The records also show he’s pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a trial in November on a theft charge.
