Images of three-antler deer captured by Michigan photographer

Steve Lindberg couldn’t believe his eyes.

But once he really looked at his photos, he realized he snapped a most unusual sight — a whitetail deer with three antlers. The Michigan photographer, and former hunter, captured the images just five days before hunting season.

His Facebook post has now been seen around the world.

“A three antlered, nine or twelve point buck (depending if you want to count the two little tines on the right antler, and the small tine on the left antler),” Lindberg posted last week. “I don’t recall ever seeing a three antlered deer before.”

And yes, it is real.

Veterinarian Steve Edwards told the Detroit Free Press the buck looked normal and healthy — aside the three antlers.

He suggested as either as an embryo, the bud that leads to an antler’s growth, separated into two, or the bud was damaged somehow later in life causing it to split.

“I’ve never seen one. I’ve never heard of one,” said Edwards, who has been a vet for three decades. “I’d say it’s probably a one-in-a-million thing.”
