Firefighters set up ladders to help raccoon rescue themselves from burning building

Firefighters are there to help and in the case of a burning warehouse building in South Bend, Indiana, the victims who needed rescuing were raccoons.

The heroes were both the firefighters and the raccoons themselves. The fire department set up ladders and the raccoons scurried down them to escape the smoke and flakes.

Two raccoons were able to scamper away safely from a warehouse fire in South Bend, Indiana, thanks to the ladder work of the city’s fire department.

“Some people would ask, ‘Why save the raccoons?’” the department wrote in a Facebook post featuring video shot by bystander Paul Bierwagen. “Life safety and property conservation are two priorities on a fire scene. Thanks to our crews for taking a few minutes to let the raccoons escape.”

The heroism of Indiana’s South Bend Fire Department caught the attention of Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Democratic presidential candidate Buttigieg later met with the firefighters to thank them.
